How Teachers Are Finding Unique Ways to Support Trans Students
Teachers who go out of their way to affirm the names, gender identities, and pronouns of their students save lives and provide a psychologically safe environment for learning. The toxic discourse around gender identity often drowns out the positive impact on the lives of gender-expansive youth.
With the increase in anti-Trans legislation and negative visibility, teachers and school administrators are increasingly fearful and confused about what to do to support our gender-expansive young people. Even in times of crisis, there is always something that can be done to show someone that they matter. We’re sharing the post below to illustrate one of the ways that teachers can practice mindfulness regarding gender identity.
I know from experience what it’s like to be both the Trans student and the Trans teacher in a gender-restrictive school setting. It’s often exhausting and dispiriting, but small gestures like these save lives. As a DEI lead in a school, I created a gender transition plan that centered on the needs of students and families, helped educate the faculty, and reduced bias. Here’s what the parent of the student shared about the experience:
"When my Transgender teen came out at school, they were misgendered repeatedly, and we asked Chris for support. They helped us advocate for gender-affirming school policies. Chris helped our teen feel seen and supported.”—Jessica K., parent of a Transgender child.
LGBTQ youth who report the presence of trusted adults in their school have higher levels of self-esteem, according to a 2017 study. Another study showed that the presence of Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) has been found to significantly reduce the risk of depression and increase well-being among LGBTQ youth and young adults.
Teachers and other trusted adults play a huge role in creating safe spaces, and these spaces continue to be necessary. Kudos to the educators of all genders who work to make sure trans and gender-expansive young people have respect and dignity at school. They’re saving lives.
